The layoff rumor mill has been on fire this week with talks of massive cuts at ESPN which is based in Bristol, CT. This means hundreds of Connecticut residents could potentially not have a job by the end of the day.

From Bloomberg News:

Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN sports network, confronting rising programming costs and a loss of viewers, plans to eliminate as many as 350 positions, about 4.3 percent of its workforce, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The cuts will be announced to employees as early as Wednesday, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the matter because it isn’t public.

While any job lost in any department is not a good thing the one area I sure hope ESPN doesn’t cut from are the staff writers of the “This Is SportsCenter” commercials. They are consistently the funniest ads on television and now have taken on a whole new life as shareable videos online. I would hope that would be enough to keep the SportsCenter video department intact today.

On what could be a depressing day for many at the Worldwide Leader, let’s take a moment to laugh and appreciate the brilliance of ‘This Is SportsCenter’.
