Blasphemy Again on the Horizon At The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Yesterday marks one of the few days of the year where rock enthusiasts and historians often have ulcers, hemorrhages and aneurysms not caused by excessive rocking and headbanging. We found out the nominees for the 2014 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Honestly, it should be called the Rock and Roll Hall of Blasphemy because the knuckleheads that nominate and select who goes in often forget the keyword of this hall of fame. ROCK AND ROLL!
While the list has some strong contenders in Deep Purple (who should have been in their first year of eligibility in 1992), Yes (Prog Rock icons), Peter Gabriel (already in as a member of Genesis), Kiss (The band that has an ARMY for a fan base) and Linda Ronstadt (arguably one of the best female Rock singers), we have many scratching our heads.
LL Cool J (don’t remember him ever putting out a rock albums), Chic (a FUNK band featuring Westport’s Nile Rodgers who is currently known for his work with Daft Punk), NWA (see LL Cool J), The Meters, The Replacements and Link Wray (who, who and who?) are all nominated too.
Other notables include Hall and Oates, The Zombies and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. You can vote for who want now on http://rockhall.com/get-involved/interact/poll/.
But the heads on favorite to be in this year on their first year of eligibility is Nirvana. While many say it is well-deserved, I say pass. Even if you want to put them in eventually, there are so many bands that need to go in first. Let’s say Nirvana gets in and Deep Purple is snubbed again (most likely scenario). If you tell me Nirvana is more deserving than Deep Purple, you obviously have no idea what great rock music is, or never opened up a rock history book.
I think that is the case with some on the committee that votes because within the past few years, we have seen non-rock artists like Madonna , The Ronettes, and Donna Summer inducted into the Hall of Fame, but yet bands that you hear every day on rock stations like 99.1 PLR, 95.9 The Fox, I-95, Rock 106.9 and The River have NEVER BEEN NOMINATED! That list includes Journey, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cheap Trick, Judas Priest; I can go forever Last year, Deep Purple finally got nominated; a band that should have been in the first year of eligibility in 1992. It only took Jon Lord, the greatest rock keyboardist ever, to die of cancer to finally get nominated, and they still didn’t get in! Maybe they will be this year’s Rush as the “Finally! What took so long?” inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Before I have a hemorrhage myself, I would like to show you a clip from “That Metal Show”. Eddie Trunk said the same thing when the 2012 nominations were out. They did a whole segment on it too, that I totally agree with. If you love and appreciate rock music like I do, you would agree.
