Matt Damon has been on a roll over the last few years, but what was the last Matt Damon Matt Damon movie you saw? Since walking away from the Bourne movies– the franchise that turned him from Will Hunting into THE Matt Damon– Damon has starred in dozens of high profile movies, been nominated for many, many awards, and pulled ahead of the other leading men on his level as the actor with the best career. Matt Damon gets a lot of at bats, but he gets a lot of hits, too.
This weekend with the debut of Jason Bourne, Damon returns to the series that helped to make him one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood. I’ve seen exactly one trailer– the SuperBowl spot where he knocks someone out with one punch– and I’ve been in ever since.
Action movies are always good because you always know what you’re going to get. It’s the same way that pizza is always, ‘good.’ Very rarely are good movies also action movies. The Bourne franchise is at the forefront of that cross section. It’s the rare type of pizza that in addition to being pizza is also an amazing meal.
Early reviews of Jason Bourne have said that it doesn’t quite live up to The Bourne Identity, but at this point I don’t think it needs to. Matt Damon the actor is back in the role that made him the kind of actor we believed could live on Mars by himself– Matt Damon the movie star. In a summer jam packed run of the mill ‘summer’ movies, I’ll take another slice of Jason Bourne vs. Everyone every day of the week.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT (via Wikipedia): Several years after his disappearance at the conclusion of The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne unexpectedly resurfaces at a time when the world is faced with unprecedented instability. At the same time, a new program, Ironhand, has been created to hunt him down while he is still trying to find all the answers to his past and family.
