As we enter the final stretch of Summer Blockbuster Season, the first weekend of August brings a bit of a movie grab bag. With four movies entering wide release each appealing to four very different movie audiences, this week isn’t really an either/or kind of feature — it’s more of an if/then.  Here is a quick cheat sheet of what to see instead of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and before you see Straight Outta Compton which debuts next week.

 

IF YOU LOVE EMOTIONALLY LACED DRAMEDIES, THEN SEE RIKKI AND THE FLASH

It’s About: t’s been a roller-coaster ride for Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl Streep), a one-time wife and mother of three who left her family behind to follow her dreams of rock ‘n’ roll stardom. Now, the singer and guitarist must face the music when she returns home to Indiana to reconnect with ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline), troubled daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer) and engaged son Josh (Sebastian Stan). Filled with regret, Ricki hopes to find redemption for all of the bad choices that she made in the past.

 

 

IF YOU LOVE BRITISH SENSIBILITIES AND FAMILY ANIMATED MOVIES, THEN SEE SHAUN THE SHEEP

It’s About: Shaun the Sheep thinks and acts like a person in a barnyard, which usually gets him into trouble. The farmer’s sheepdog, Bitzer, tries to keep Shaun and his friends out of trouble. The farmer is oblivious to the humanlike features of his flock, who are like one big, happy family.

 

 

IF YOU LOVE THRILLERS WITH A MYSTERIOUS TWIST, THEN SEE THE GIFT

It’s About: When married couple Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) unexpectedly encounter Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon’s past, little do they know that their perfect lives will be thrown into a terrifying tailspin. At first, Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo, but after a troubling series of uninvited encounters and mysterious gifts, a horrifying secret emerges. As Robyn learns what really happened between Simon and Gordo, she begins to question how well she knows her spouse.

It’s About: Four young outsiders acquire amazing abilities after a trip to an alternate universe changes their physical forms in unforeseen ways.
