I am sure you are all recovering nicely from your post-Halloween sugar hangover and I hope you left some room for popcorn.  This weekend is a big one at the box office as Big Hero 6, the latest movie from Disney Animation (the studio behind Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen) goes head to head with Interstellar, the last movie from director Christopher Nolan (the Dark Knight Trilogy, Momento, Inception).

It is a genre movie toss up- an animated superhero movie vs. a space opera.

The Interstellar ensemble cast of Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, among others will no doubt put on an acting clinic.  It’s hard to imagine a movie about the earth slowly dying not being very dramatic.  The flip side of the same coin is that it is about searching space for a planet that can sustain human life, so the special effects are going to be Gravity level amazing.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Big Hero 6 just looks like a ton of fun.  Loosely based on the Marvel comic of the same name, Big Hero 6 is the latest movie from the Disney studio behind Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen.  While short, that is a pretty serious track record of hits.  It’s hard to imagine that after hitting three home runs, they’d strike out with what looks (in the trailer) like a new franchise.

With Disney now being the parent company of Marvel Comics, BH6 has the best chance of bringing together the best of both of those worlds; it will be fun to watch, easy to follow, and be able to laugh at itself without being too “inside baseball” or “inside fanboy” so to speak.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Set in a fictional futuristic hybrid metropolis called San Fransokyo (a portmanteau of San Francisco and Tokyo), a young robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada and his robot Baymax uncover a criminal plot and pull together a team of inexperienced crime-fighters.
