The “Land of Steady Habits” has set its sights on a new item to ban. Plastic bags are next on the list of things to get rid of, with a new bill passing on Monday.
This new bill would ban Connecticut stores from giving customers single-use plastic bags starting in January 2020. The proposed law would require paper bags issued by stores to be 100 percent recyclable and contain 40 percent recycled material.
Several towns and cities around the state have already adopted a ban or at least limited the sale of plastic bags and turned to paper or cloth bags as an alternative.
If the full extent of the banning plastic bags bill were to pass through the necessary chambers, Connecticut would only be the third state, joining Hawaii and California for a full plastic bag ban.
