A Connecticut teacher just received the bragging rights of a lifetime.

Jahana Hayes, a history teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, has been crowned the 2016 National Teacher of the Year.  She received the special recognition at a White House ceremony with President Barack Obama last Tuesday.

Mrs. Hayes says she always dreamed of becoming a teacher, but her story of how she landed her dream job is incredibly inspiring.  The odds of realizing her dream were stacked against her.  She grew up in a housing project surrounded by poverty, drugs, and crime.  She then became pregnant at 17.

She says if it wasn’t for her teachers who pushed her to graduate and pursue a college degree, she .

Now, she’s having the same effect on her students.  It’s incredible to think how many lives she has changed and will continue to impact.  Congrats, Mrs. Hayes!
