Heck yeah, time for some bragging rights!  When you think of where the best blue cheese in the world is… Connecticut doesn’t come to mind.  Until now.  As it turns out, we have the best on the planet.

The Hour reports that Arethusa Farm in Bantam, CT entered the 2018 World Championship Cheese Contest.  Their entry?  A decadent English-style blue cheese called Arethusa Blue.

So, where did this glorious cheese take home the gold?  In cheese capital USA, baby: Madison, Wisconsin!

This global contest has been a staple in determining the world’s finest cheese since 1957.   It’s also the largest  cheese competition in the world.

So, if you think this is a non-story, think again.  This is huge!

Over 26 countries competed this year, spending 3 days trying to convince all 55 judges that their cheese reigned supreme.  But, only one could take home the ultimate prize.

And Arethusa Blue just so happens to be one of the most “perfect cheeses” on the planet.

So, how does Arethusa make its blue cheese?  Well, cheesemaker Matt Benham didn’t skip on the details.

He explained that on the first morning, he and his fellow cheesemakers culture and coagulate the milk.  Then during the overnight, they let the curd drain slowly.

Then the fun stuff happens:

“The following day, the curd is firm and tangy. We run it through a hand-cranked mill, resulting in small, irregularly shaped curds. These curds are tossed with salt before being packed into cylindrical forms. The resulting wheel ages for about four months before it’s ready for release.”

Yes, they go through an entire production to perfect their creation.  And all that hard work paid off this year!

Plus, their painstaking dedication to cheesemaking scored them two other wins in this year’s contest.

Their Camembert came 4th in its respective category.  Also their Tapping Reeve cheese came sixth in the natural rind cheddar category.  Yum!

Arethusa Farm also has an extensive pedigree.  In fact, George Malkemus, the president of the shoe company Manolo Blahnik, along with his vice president, Anthony Yurgaitis, started this cheese farm in 2001.

Besides cheese, they also specialize in yogurt, cream, butter, and milk.

So, obviously, you want to get your hands on their cheese now.  I mean, winning such major awards is one thing, but the fact that the masterminds behind these companies are fashion juggernauts…?  Yeah, count me excited!

Arethusa Blue sells to several vendors so you can pick up their world-renowned blue cheese across the shoreline.  However, you are most likely to find their creations at their very own retail store on Chapel Street in New Haven.  Also, feel free to travel all the way up to their restaurant, Arethusa al tavolo, a farm-to-table restaurant in Bantam.

However, they also sell to Wholefoods in Fairfield,  Harbor Harvest in Norwalk, and at Greenwich and Fairfield Cheese Company.
