Back in August, Mohegan Sun and the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority signed a deal with the owners of the former National Lacrosse League franchise the Philadelphia Wings. In the agreement, the team would be relocated and play its home games at Mohegan Sun Arena, and now the team has a new name.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the New England Black Wolves.
The name and logo was unveiled in the Wolf Den at the Uncasville casino Friday morning, as was the team’s schedule for the 2015 season. The Black Wolves will kick off their inaugural season hosting the Buffalo Bandits on January 2nd at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Black Wolves will play an 18 game regular season schedule that wraps up in May.
Mohegan Tribe chairman Kevin Brown said the name is a reference to the tribe’s history, which was once part of the Delaware Nation’s Wolf Clan. Brown continued to explain how the tribe made its way through New York in search of resources the Connecticut shoreline offered.
“It’s a name and a spirit that belongs here in Mohegan territory,” Brown said.
Rather than naming the team the Mohegan or Connecticut Black Wolves, the owners chose New England as they will promote the team to players and fans not only in Connecticut, but in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and other surrounding states. Co-owner Brad Brewster explained how moving the team to Connecticut was a no-brainer, given the popularity of the sport in the region.
New England will be a member of the NLL’s Eastern Conference along with the Buffalo Bandits, Minnesota Swarm, Toronto Rock, and the 2014 NLL champion Rochester Knighthawks. The Western Conference consists of the Edmonton Rush, Calgary Roughnecks, Colorado Mammoth, and Vancouver Stealth.
