It’s safe to say that travelling can be a bit pricey if you’re on a budget. However, if you’re looking to take a trip to Springfield from Hartford or New Haven, you’ll be able to get a free ride this weekend.

No, I’m not kidding.

According to the Hartford Line website, CTrail service ambassadors wearing red shirts will be handing out complimentary tickets on the platforms at all stations throughout the weekend to promote the new Hartford Line.

The Harford Line promises travelers that it will “quickly and easily” connect you to the New Haven Line, Amtrak Northeast Corridor, and Shore Line East services. And, with speeds up to 110 MPH, it promises to be an easier alternative to commuters than 1-91. The trip from New Haven to Hartford will be about 45 minutes, with the trip to Springfield being about 110.

Furthermore, the site says that there will be 17 trains operating daily between New Haven and Hartford, with 12 trains continuing into Springfield. Additionally, it also will offer an easy connection to the CTfastrak bus transit services in Hartford/New Britain.

Currently, there are nine stations connected to the Hartford Line. Those stations are: New Haven Union Station, New Haven State Street Station, Wallingford, Meriden, Berlin, Hartford Union Station, Windsor, Windsor Locks, and Springfield Union Station.  Additionally, two stations in Enfield and North Haven are in the design process.

CTrail was developed as a partnership between the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), CTrain, and Amtrak. According to a CTPost article entitled New CTrail Hartford Line Connects Up Connecticut, the project began 15 years ago with the goal to have “links” to Metro North’s New Haven, New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branch lines, the existing Amtrak services, and the Shoreline East Line to Rhode Island.

Furthermore, the article says the goal of CTrail was to “offer relatively low rates.” And, looking on the Hartford Line Fare schedule, the prices are pretty reasonable. The price for a one-way ticket to get from New Haven to Springfield is $12.75, and $25.50 for round trip. And, the prices get even lower as you venture further north.

So, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, maybe the answer is take advantage of this deal. But, be sure to check the schedule before you make any travel plans.
