Connecticut prides itself on many different foods… hamburgers, pizza, PEZ, and of course hot dogs.
With Memorial Day Weekend kicking off today, we figured we would celebrate by ranking the best hot dog locations here in Connecticut. Because nothing says America and Memorial Day like stuffing your face with delicious meat in buns.
WHAT TO GET: Man V Food Dog – chili, cheese, onions, peppers and bacon or The “2-Foot hot Dog”
WHY WE LOVE IT: The fact that they have a footlong dog and it’s only their THIRD longest hot dog. Yup. They also have a 16′ and their famous gigantic 2-foot-long dog. Amazing.
WHAT TO GET: Super Dog – Long Dog with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese
WHY WE LOVE IT: Danny’s is the definition of “road food” at it’s best. You see it off the highway and instantly crave a dog. They also aren’t a one-trick pony. They make a MEAN lobster roll.
WHAT TO GET: The Works Dog – deep fried dog, sauerkraut, fried bacon, mustard and fried onions.
WHY WE LOVE IT: They were featured on the Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate”. Enough said.
WHAT TO GET: Hot Dog “up”: hot dog, mustard, onions, famous sauce.
WHY WE LOVE IT: They get all of their hot dogs local, the famous sauce is house-made and absolutely amazing. To the point that they sell it by the pint. The fries rule too.
WHAT TO GET: The chili cheese dog with the works.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Don’t be fooled by the other Swanky Franks locations around CT. While they are still tasty, this is THE ORIGINAL Swanky Franks. A Norwalk staple, family owned since 1949.
WHAT TO GET: Deputy Dog – BBQ Pulled Pork , Cheddar Cheese.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Woody’s was featured on the Travel Channel show, Man vs. Food. Anywhere that crazy guy goes is clearly a winner. Cozy feel to the inside. If you happen to be a Miami Dolphin’s fan, you’ll be in heaven. The owners are from Florida originally and the place is decked out in Dolphins memorabilia.
WHAT TO GET: The New Englander – sauerkraut, bacon, mustard sweet relish & raw onion
WHY WE LOVE IT: They seem to have figured out the perfect cooking temperature for the dogs. They also give them that nice slice down the middle. Not only can you get your Super Duper Weenie fix at the location on Black Rock Turnpike, but they also have a traveling food truck! Plus, they have a Super Hero mascot logo. Which is awesome.
WHAT TO GET: Foot-Long Hot Dog Stand Special – chili, cheese, bacon, fried onions
WHY WE LOVE IT: Started out as just a shack in the middle of a parking lot in the 1930’s. Now, it has become a true full drive-in restaurant and home to some of the best hot dogs around.
WHAT TO GET: Classic foot long with Frankie’s famous relish
WHY WE LOVE IT: A perfect summer spot. Nothing like eating a Frankie’s dog on the hood of your car on a beautiful summer day. Their New England style grilled rolls will blow your mind.
WHAT TO GET: Custom Blackie’s Dog – special homemade pepper relish, spicy mustard
WHY WE LOVE IT: Ah yes, Blackie’s. A true Connecticut institution. Not only are their hot dogs the best, the place also has a great old school feel to it. Counter seating, wood panel walls, a soda fountain, and even a jukebox! The dogs themselves have that great snap to them when you take a bite, while not being too much. Their special homemade pepper relish is something made from the nectar of the gods. Truly amazing.
Alright I’m starving now… is it lunch time yet? Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Go eat everything.
