With some of the biggest names in music in Montreal for this weekend’s Osheaga Music & Arts Festival, it is no surprise that Bridgeport’s own ‘Gathering of the Vibes’ is being overlooked from a musical standpoint. But unlike Osheaga and many other prominent 3-4 day festivals, GOTV has a specific and unique culture around it, effectively making it just as much about the vibe & the ambience as the music.
Since its inaugural weekend in Purchase, NY, the GOTV has always been and always will be about the Grateful Dead and their fan base, the Deadheads. Over the course of 30 years, the Grateful Dead has amassed an unprecedented sodality of dedicated and passionate fans that have effectively created their own subculture through fashion, music, art, and other means of expression. The Gathering of the Vibes highlights these things and gives Deadheads a chance to bask in all the glory of the culture they’ve manufactured and shaped over the course of the last 50 years.
With over 50 musical acts rooted in folk, jazz, rock, reggae, and R&B, including a performance by original Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, this year’s lineup will surely be one of the best that GOTV has seen thus far in its 19 years of existence. Add this to the multitude of unique, Grateful Dead-themed craft vendors, contests & prizes, and great food and it will undoubtedly be a distinctive experience. Not to mention, camping in Brideport’s historic Seaside Park is permitted, so the festival really does embody the gathering in “Gathering of the Vibes”.
The unity and comradery amongst those deeply rooted in the Grateful Dead and their culture is what really makes the Gathering of the Vibes a special experience. Although the likes of Outkast, the Arctic Monkeys, and Lorde will be in Montreal this weekend, the Gathering of the Vibes is, in fact, all about the diaspora of positive vibes and should be realistically be a viable local option for everyone this weekend. Not to mention, we here at CTBoom will be there covering and live tweeting the festival all weekend, so be sure to check us out too 😉
