Now, to backtrack a bit, the snack itself isn’t exactly going to be the star of this movie. No animated bright red-orange Cheetos with eyes and hands will be walking around on screen! Although, Sausage Party did it pretty well, so anything is possible!
The movie will actually be based on the creator of the snack, Richard Montanez. The working title of this movie is Flamin’ Hot. This will be a biopic about Richard and his climb to the top.
Richard started as a janitor at Frito-Lay where he came up with the brilliant idea for the hot Cheetos snack and the rest, as they say, is history.
According to Variety, Montanez is often “referred to as the Godfather of Multicultural Marketing” because of this idea. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos helped turn Frito-Lay into a phenomenon and turn Richard Montanez into an executive.
Montanez is no stranger to telling the story of his life. In 2013, he published a memoir about his rise to success called A Boy, a Burrito, and a Cookie. In this book, he chronicles his time from janitor to millionaire.
According to The Washington Post, Richard is a son of immigrants who started off working as a migrant farm worker and speaking no English. He felt like an outsider until he started to use his differences to his advantage.
There is one story Richard tells in the book of his childhood that shows the entrepreneurial spirit he had from early on. He would take burritos to school for lunch while other children took bologna sandwiches. He felt like an outcast until his mother made him two burritos for lunch and told him to make friends. After that, Richard started selling burritos to his classmates in school.
Richard had struggles in school growing up. Because of the language barrier, he dropped out and started working odd jobs for little cash.
Years later, however, his tycoon spirit would come out again, when he would develop the idea for what is now everybody’s favorite snack. He was working as a janitor when one day the assembly line broke. The Cheetos were not covered in their signature orange cheese dust. So, Richard went to work and applied the same principles of Mexican street corn to the Cheetos. And thus, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos were born!
Richard Montanez then presented his idea to the Frito-Lay CEO, after studying marketing from a book at the library. Needless to say, the idea went over beautifully, and everybody enjoys the spicy red snacks worldwide, because of it.
Fox Searchlight is looking to turn this story into a movie, with help from Montanez himself on developing the script. Devon Franklin, who is best known for producing movies such as Miracles From Heaven and Heaven Is For Real will jump on as producer of the peppery pic.
Fox has not announced when the film will be released or when production will start. So, while the world waits for the Flamin’ Hot flick, the only appropriate thing to do is eat all of the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos!
