In another sign of the times a legendary Newington landmark will be closing its doors. Mortensen’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Shoppe announced that they will close on Dec 31st. Rod Mortensen, former Mayor of Newingotn, did say that the Ice cream Shoppe would reopen at the same location although it would occupy less space in the building. The majority of the building will go to a new Moe’s Southwest Grille.

I do love me some burritos but it saddens me to see such a landmark restaurant close. If you never made it to Mortensen’s you missed out on the classic American dining experience. Delicious diner style food prepared by staff that knew their regulars’ names. Employees were family, friends and local high school kids. Not to mention their amazing ice cream!

The good news is that the ice cream will return to the location after some renovations. They say you can’t stop progress but this is one of those times I wish you could.

This is really sad to see. Mortensen's is such a wonderful restaurant that I and my friends have been going to for years. It's not often you see a small business like this anymore. Family owned and run with a close knit group of employees who knew the customers and actually cared. Many employees had worked there for a number of years and it also provided a great place for younger people to work and have a decent job while in school. The family has been working in the restaurant and dairy field for over 60 years to boot. Mom and Pop stores are dead here in America now. Big business just has too many advantages and the little guys always get the short end of the stick. Now another big chain will move in and it will be as soul-less as all the others. And employees wont have as much freedom, security or fun. This is a very sad day indeed.
