You now have an excuse binge watch dog videos all day — as if you needed one of course. Today is National Puppy Day.

Founded in 2006, National Puppy Day according to their website, is a “special day to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring to our lives.” It was founded by celebrity pet and home lifestyle expert and author, Colleen Paige, who wanted to create a “special day of recognition that improve the lives of animals and their people.”

There are several ways to celebrate National Puppy Day — whether you have a puppy or not. One of the suggestions is from the website is to adopt a puppy from your local shelter. Adopting from a shelter is the best way to get a dog, in my opinion. I adopted my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Maggie, from a shelter several years ago. What many don’t realize is that these dogs are abandoned, and adopting them gives them a new home.

Take Maggie for example. When we got her in 2005, she was skinny and had a broken leg. Additionally, she was also abused. However, several years later, it’s safe to say that was far in her past. She has not only me but my mother and grandmother wrapped around her little paw. Literally.

But, what if you have a dog already? I know Maggie won’t be too happy if I came home with one.

Don’t worry, there’s several ways that you can celebrate this holiday as well. For instance, if you already own a dog, why don’t you treat him/her to something nice? Whether it’s a special treat, a new toy, or even a belly rub, chances are your furry friend will love the extra attention. Of course, if your dog is anything like mine, this is a daily occurrence for them.

In addition to showering your puppy with treats, today is a good day to ensure that they are healthy. Make sure that they are up to date with all of their vaccinations and make sure that they had all of their checkups. After all, a healthy puppy is a happy one.

Additionally, you can score some great freebies for your special puppy today. According to an article on Wide Open Pets entitled 15 Freebies, Deals and Coupons for National Puppy Day, many sites are offering discounts on supplies and toys for your puppy. For example, you can get your first Bark Box — a box filled with toys — for $10 when you subscribe for 6 or 12 months. Speaking from experience, that is a dream come true for any puppy.

Furthermore, other sites such as Target and Kohl’s are offering free shipping for pet supplies. Furthermore, Kohl’s is also offering 15 percent off all orders over $100. Both stores have an amazing selection of pet supplies, so if you’re running low on anything, today’s the day to score a deal.

However, if you’re unable to adopt or have a dog of your own, the National Puppy Day website has a few suggestions on how you can participate. One way you can do so is donate to your local animal shelter — whether it’s a monetary one, puppy food, or toys. Another way, the site says, is to host a community fund raising event to raise money for a local shelter.

Therefore, Happy National Puppy Day to all of the puppies out there. And, with that being said, I would like to especially wish my dog Maggie the same. Even though she is no longer a puppy, she is still my best friend and continues to put a smile on my face.
