The 2018 Gerber Baby has been named. Drum roll, please…
1-year-old Lucas Warren from Dalton, Georgia has been chosen as the new Gerber baby!
Lucas is also the first baby with Down Syndrome to be chosen for the honor; making him a history-making baby! The Gerber baby photo search has been going on since 2010. More than 140,000 photos were submitted to the contest and Gerber selected Lucas from the huge pool of applicants.
According to The Washington Post, chief executive and president of Gerber, Bill Partyka, Lucas has a great smile and personality, so he was chosen for the honor. He said, “Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s long-standing heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby. This year, Lucas is the perfect fit.”
Lucas’ father said he hopes that this will bring more acceptance to those with Down Syndrome or other similar conditions. Jason Warren told Today, “They have the potential to change the world, just like everybody else.”
While Lucas’ father wants widespread acceptance, Lucas’s mother, Cortney Warren, wants people to see Lucas as Lucas and not just view him because of his condition. “He may have Down syndrome, but he’s always Lucas first,” she said. “He’s got an awesome personality, and he goes through the milestones of every child. ”
The Warrens received a $50,000 prize for winning the contest. And, Gerber will feature Lucas on their social media channels all year.
So, congratulations Lucas! It’s about time we had a Gerber baby like you; a spokesbaby with an infectious smile and a killer fashion sense!
