Sometimes a football game is bigger than sports.
That was definitely the case Saturday night in Trumbull as Newtown High School football won the State Championship in dramatic fashion.
The Nighthawks scored a 36 yard touchdown with 3 seconds left on the clock as quarterback Jack Street connected with Riley Ward down the sideline completing the walk off 13-7 win against Darien. Their first championship since 1992.
Saturday being the 7th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Tragedy this unbelievable finish was a little slice of joy for a community has endured the unthinkable over the last 7 years. Students all dressed in Sandy Hook green watched and cheered on the Nighthawks to an amazing victory they will all never forget.
That’s the great thing about sports. They have the mysterious power to spark feelings beyond what anything else in life ever could, right at the perfect moment. Love was certainly in the air on that football field Saturday night for a community that needed it most.
