Nothing cures a post Oscar hangover like some trailers for summer blockbusters! There are LOTS of movies to get to and LOTS of big, dumb, expensive things on the way. Here are just a few of the big budget movies on the way to the theater broken out by month.
What its about: In a futuristic Chicago, people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities. Beatrice “Tris” Prior discovers that she is Divergent, meaning she does not fit into any one faction, and soon uncovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.
Gut Reaction: Being groomed to be “The next Hunger Games” is not an easy task, but Divergent may be the exception if only because the ramp up to the debut, time of year it’s being released, and overall approach to the marketing is exactly the same as The Hunger Games. Shailene Woodley, the star of the movie, had to drop out of the Spider-Man sequels due to her committment to this franchise… so at least one person thinks it’s going to be great.
Release Date: March 21, 2014
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet
April: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
What its about: Two years after the events of The Avengers, Steve Rogers resides peacefully in Washington, D.C., struggling to adapt to contemporary society. However, after a S.H.I.E.L.D. compatriot is assailed, Rogers becomes entangled in a mystery that may endanger the globe. Together with Natasha Romanoff, Captain America attempts to uncover the growing machination while fending off hired hit men. When the entire scheme is discovered, Captain America and the Black Widow must recruit the aid of the Falcon and soon encounter an unanticipated and powerful adversary — the Winter Soldier.
Gut Reaction: Early feedback on the film has stated that Captain America: The Winter Soldier has the potential to be the best Marvel movie to date. It would be tough to top the original Iron Man- but I have faith in Cap. Don’t mess with that shield!
Release Date: April 4, 2014
Starring: Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson
What its about: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
Gut Reaction: Some people love the trailers, some people hate the trailers. I am obsessed with the trailers. This is going to be great. It can only improve from where 1998-Puffy-Daddy-Soundtracked-Ferris-Bueller-Starring version left off.
Release Date: May 16th, 2014
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen
June: Transformers: Age of Extinction
What its about: A mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots, the Decepticons, and a paranoid government official on them.
Gut Reaction: Shia LaBouf doesn’t want to be famous anymore? Totally fine. You know who loves being famous? Marky Mark Wahlberg. Say “Hi” to your mother(board) for me, alright?
Release Date: June 27, 2014
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, DINO-BOTS
July: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
What its about: A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
Gut Reaction: I was super skeptical walking into Rise of the Planet of the Apes when it debuted in 2011 and was surprised at how much I liked it. The CGI looks insanely good and I have a feeling that warlord primates might be the new super heroes/ young adult dystopian rebel leaders.
Release Date: July 11, 2014
Starring: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke
August: Guardians of the Galaxy
What its about: In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket,Drax the Destroyer, and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
Gut Reaction: A comic book space adventure starring nothing but Han Solos- one of which is a talking racoon and one is a talking tree. I’m calling it now- movie of the summer.
Release Date: August 1, 2014
Starring: Chris Pratt, John C. Reilly, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana
