Finally, some good news! Seriously, it’s like we’ve been on a strict diet of negative headlines for, like, a week now. That is all changing. PBS will bathe one Connecticut hospital in a healthy dose of national limelight this weekend.
The Hour reports that PBS is featuring Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan in its next episode of “Visionaries.” Visionaries is a series highlighting different nonprofits across the nation.
PBS will profile the psychiatric hospital through the eyes of its former patients. One former patient, Alexandra Zerzan, says Silver Hill treated her like a person and made her feel safe.
The episode will also tackle the stigma of mental illness and how it prevents people from seeking help. Dr. Sigurd Ackerman, the hospital’s president and medical director, has high hopes for the episode. He believes this episode will encourage more people to get the help they need.
Telling The Hour, “When people have a mental illness that is significant enough to be in the hospital, people view themselves as having failed in some way.”
In fact, that is why the episode is titled “Only in the Darkness Can You See the Stars.”
It airs this Saturday on Connecticut Public Television at 7 p.m. Also, there will be an encore airing this Sunday at 11 a.m.
