At what age should someone be allowed to purchase tobacco products? According to the American Lung Association, that age should be kicked up from 18 to 21 years old.
They are trying to pass a law that starts in Hartford that would change the age of the buyer.
The interesting aspect of this, is if this passes and is approved, it would only effect Hartford, not all of Connecticut.
Hartford would be the first city in Connecticut to pass this policy.
Advocates for the change say that if a person is buying these products at 18, then companies advertise to younger and younger audiences, possibly getting kids as young as 13 or 14 to try their products.
Six states and more than 350 cities in the country have raised the tobacco sales age to 21.
The vote will be next Monday and it would start right away in the city, but couldn’t be enforced for 180 days, according to law.
