Distracted driving has become quite the epidemic over the last few years. Smartphones have changed our lives for good and for bad. When it comes to driving it’s mostly bad. Whether its texting while driving, phone calls, your GPS of choice, or just trying to snap that perfect “road trip selfie” all of it is dangerous and none of it seems to be coming to an end any time soon.
There have been many efforts to try and solve the distracted driving problem. Police road blocks all over the state here in Connecticut, distracted driving month, the popular ‘It Can Wait’ campaign, phone manufacturers building in ‘away messages’ to let people know that you’re driving, I even saw ‘texting rest stop areas’ while driving around last weekend. Even with all of that it STILL doesn’t seem like enough to stop people from being glued to their phones while in drivers seat.
So what is the ultimate solution for the future? It might be in the hands of the automakers.
Tesla are the first ones out of the gate. Their new ‘autopilot’ feature could be the ultimate solution to all of our problems.
How crazy is that?! Obviously this is just a concept idea that is still years away from being a reality on the roads. But it does seem like it would be a perfect solution to distracted driving. Let the car do the driving while you text, check email, and post that road trip selfie.
In the meantime, be careful out there on the roads with that phone.
