A year ago this weekend, New York Giants fans everywhere cringed in shame when they heard their prized Jason Pierre-Paul shortened up his enormous wingspan by blowing up part of his hand with July 4th fireworks. Would he return? Can he even use his hand?
Doctors had wanted to amputate the entire hand, but instead compromised and took off a finger and left another finger mangled. Now, this July 4th, JPP is the star of a firework safety PSA.
“So Fourth of July, I lit up a firework, thought I could throw it away real quick and in a split second blew off my whole hand just right there,” Pierre-Paul says. “On the way to the hospital, all I could do is think about was my son and was I going to make it? Now I’m just truly, truly blessed to be alive. Now when I look at fireworks I think about the safety.”
The past season he wore a custom-made glove or a club-like wrap type of thing. But this video, he shows just what that hand looks like after an explosion and boy…it’s gnarly. #FireworksHurt for sure, JPP.
