Trayvon Martin Supporters Petitioning Toad’s Place To Cancel Ted Nugent Concert Next Week
In the wake of the Trayvon Martin verdict a few weeks ago, a group of people in New Haven have started a petition to get Toad’s Place in New Haven to cancel the Ted Nugent show on August 6th.
Nugent, who let’s be honest isn’t known for being the most rational soft spoken guy on the planet, has been pretty open and loud mouthed about the Trayvon verdict. Saying thing’s like he was a “17-year-old dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe.” and that “Trayvon had no reason not to attack, because it was the standard thug thing to do.”
Here is how the actual petition that is up now on change.org reads:
We, the undersigned, ask that out of respect for the New Haven community, which is experiencing a great deal of grief as a result of the Trayvon Martin verdict, you cancel the Ted Nugent show scheduled for August 6th.
Some of the distasteful things that Mr. Nugent has said in the aftermath of the verdict are about Trayvon, a murdered child are:
• Trayvon Martin, was a “17-year-old dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe.”
• “Trayvon had no reason not to attack, because it was the standard thug thing to do.”
New Haven is a community coming together in the aftermath of the Trial of George Zimmerman. Actions across the city—from rallies to marches to discussions—have been attended by individuals of multiple races and ethnicities and we feel that Mr. Nugent, who has a right to express his opinion, is not someone who operates in the spirit that this city does.
We understand that you may consider this a First Amendment issue, and while Mr. Nugent has a right to his speech that right does not require that he do so here. As a small business owner in New Haven we ask that you support those of us bringing together community not the hate speech of Mr. Nugent.
They already have over 1,500 supporters. Even if Toad’s does not cancel the show (which I’m sure they won’t. As crazy as The Nuge is, it just seems ridiculous to cancel a whole show and lose out on money they will make for the night over a few thousand pissed off people) the group of Trayvon Martin supporters still plan on protesting outside of Toad’s place before and during the Ted Nugent show on August 6th.
Either way, whatever ends up happening, just know that next Tuesday night around 6:30pm, you probably don’t want to be anywhere near York Street in New Haven.
