Stamford and Norwalk have joined forces to get rid of plastic straws in their towns.
Mayor David Martin of Stamford and Mayor Harry Rilling held a press conference at the Maritime Aquarium yesterday, which just so happened to be Earth Day, to discuss when the ban of plastic bags and straws will go into effect.
The Stamford ban on plastic bags begins May 3, and the Norwalk ban takes effect July 8.
When the two towns started to draft the ban bills, they consulted each other on how the wording should go and when the bills would actually go into effect, Martin said, and straws are the next step.
It’s expected that, within 30 years, there will be more plastics in the oceans, by weight, than fish.
