It seems like we do just about everything online. From ordering food or coffee, to ordering clothing, it’s safe to say that there’s a website for just about everything you may need/want.

However, as easy as it is to order whatever I may need online, I still believe it is not the best way to shop.

For me, nothing beats going into the store and trying on what you want before you buy it, and actually seeing what you’re getting.

Online Shopping Has Some Benefits . . .

With that being said, I can see the benefits of turning to your smartphone or computer to shop. More and more stores are closing. Often times, when you go to stores, you have trouble even finding what you want. And sometimes, it may not even be there anymore. When you go online, it’s literally a click away (usually).

With that being said, things are cheaper online than they are in stories. For instance, I have an Instax Mini 8. The film for those cameras at Michael’s can be about $15 (without coupon) for a set of 10. For 40, it cost me $11 on Amazon. That’s a pretty significant savings, if you ask me.

It’s also easier to go online as well. Think about it for a second. You can just order something whenever you want, no matter what time of day it may be, and it will be there within a week. That is pretty awesome — especially when you don’t have time to adhere to store’s hours.

Just because something is easier, doesn’t always mean it’s the way to go.

For me, there are more benefits to shop at the mall or at the actual store. For example, when you shop at the store versus online, you don’t have to pay for shipping. And, with some stores online, it could easily be an extra $10. That can add up, especially if you have multiple items.

In addition to that, when you go online, you get a picture and description of what you’re getting. With that, you never know what you’re going to get.

Things are different in stores. You get to gage what size it is, in addition to looking at the quality of it. This is especially helpful when it comes to shopping for clothing, as you can feel the quality of the clothing, and be able to gage the size of it.

The importance of staying local.

However, one of the biggest reasons why I like to shop in stores is because I like to support my local businesses. I live in Hamden, and we have some amazing local businesses such as Dava, and Books and Company. Those businesses are the ones who are taking the brunt of not only big corporations, such as TJ Maxx and Barnes and Noble, but also websites. I honestly don’t understand why though, as these businesses have some pretty unique — and sometimes better — quality items.

For example, let’s say that you want to buy a copy of The Great Gatsby. Sure, you can go to Amazon to get the book that you want and saves you the trip to the bookstore. And, whenever you go to the bookstore, chances are you’re greeted with a salesperson who is full of recommendations for other books you might like.

That is definitely a much different experience that going online.

With every purchase that you make in these local stores, you are helping them make some profits. You are supporting them by buying their products, and that is how they stay alive.

To each their own.

With that being said, everyone has their own preference on how they like to shop. For some, it might very well mean for them to go online and order whatever they need for a variety of reasons — it’s easier, or they just don’t have the time to go into the stores. However, I will always prefer going into stores if possible to do my shopping.
